Overview
Curious about when or how to introduce data to your research? Want help choosing the right data for your question? Not sure what “data” even means in the humanities? This workshop will introduce you to some key vocabularies and resources for getting started with data work, assist you in framing a data-answerable research question, and guide you in finding and using an appropriate dataset to answer it. Open to graduate and undergraduate students in any discipline, but most useful to data newcomers. No programming experience required.
About the Instructors
Gavi Levy Haskell (they/she) is the DH Developer in Computational Methods and Data. Gavi has worked in museum technology at the Harvard Art Museums, and taught workshops on pedagogy at Yale’s CTL. They hold an MA in the history of art from the Courtauld Institute of Art and a BA in art history and computer science from Smith College, and are currently finishing their PhD here at Yale.
Michael Printy (he/him) is the Head of the Humanities Group and Librarian for Western European Humanities at Yale University Library. He received his PhD in history from UC Berkely (2002), and an MS in library and information science from Simmons College (2016). His publications include Enlightenment’s Reformation: Religion and Philosophy in Germany, 1750–1830 (Cambridge, forthcoming 2024) and Enlightenment and the Creation of German Catholicism (Cambridge, 2009). He is a senior co-editor of the “Knowledge/Education since 1500” module of German History Intersections, an open-access primary source translation project sponsored by the German Historical Institute.
